Intersection Car Accidents In Naples: Common Causes And How To Reduce The Risks
Car accidents in Naples are one of the leading causes of personal injuries. Intersections are one of the most common places for them to happen. A recent crash illustrates the tragic consequences these crashes can have. Our Naples car accident lawyer explains some of the most frequent causes and how motorists in our area can reduce the risks.
Naples Man Killed In Fatal Intersection Crash
A 32-year-old Naples man was recently killed in a tragic car accident in Collier County. It happened shortly before midnight at the intersection of Collier Boulevard and Manatee Road. According to a December 8, 2022 NBC News 2 report, a Chevrolet Silverado was headed northbound and had stopped at a red light at the intersection. While waiting for the light to change, the vehicle was rear ended by a 42-year-old Naples man, driving a Toyota Tacoma.
The drivers of both vehicles suffered serious personal injuries. Sadly, a passenger in the Tacoma was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are continuing to investigate but, according to witness statements, in addition to failure to stop at a red light, the speed at which the Tacoma was traveling appears to have played a role in the crash.
Intersections Are One Of The Most Common Places For Naples Car Accidents To Happen
Statistics from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) indicate that an average of more than 5,000 car accidents in Collier County happen each year. Intersections in our area are one of the most common places for them to occur.
Traffic tie-ups are common at red lights and stop signs throughout the area. Unfortunately, this only increases the likelihood of crashes. Reckless behavior on the part of drivers involved is also often to blame. This includes:
- Speeding and going too fast for conditions;
- Failure to come to a complete stop or yield the right of way;
- Distracted driving, such as talking on cell phones or texting;
- Driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications;
- Drowsy driving and falling asleep behind the wheel.
In addition to being one of the places car accidents in Naples are most likely to happen, intersection crashes are also among those most likely to prove deadly for drivers, passengers, and others involved. Pedestrian and bicycle accidents are common in intersections as well. To reduce the risks, drivers are encouraged to follow local speed limits, heed all traffic signs and signals, refrain from sudden stops, avoid rolling stops at stop signs, and do not increase their speed in an effort to make it through a yellow light before it changes.
