Flight Attendant Heralded For Heroism After Naples Plane Crash: How To Remain Calm In Unexpected Situations
Earlier this year, drivers in Collier County were surprised when a small business aircraft made an emergency landing on Interstate 75. The Naples plane crash in February 2024 narrowly missed motorists but put the lives of the five people on board at risk.
Our Naples personal injury lawyer wrote about this accident at the time. Find out more about how a flight attendant’s heroism and quick thinking helped save the lives of two passengers and how remaining calm helps protect you and others when the unexpected happens.
Flight Attendant’s Heroism Helped Prevent Additional Fatalities In Naples Plane Crash
On February 9, 2024, a Bombardier Challenger 600 carrying two passengers, two pilots, and a flight attendant was headed from Ohio to Naples Municipal Airport when it experienced engine problems. The pilots notified the tower and were cleared for an emergency landing. Unfortunately, the plane never made it to the runway.
The 65-foot long, 53-foot wide aircraft touched down on Interstate 75 in Naples. It skidded down the interstate, went through a grassy median, and eventually crashed into a concrete sound barrier. While the accident happened just before rush hour, no motorists were involved. However, the passengers and the crew on the plane faced a life-or-death situation.
The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) credits one of the crew members for saving the lives of two people on board. In August 2024, the NBAA announced it was presenting its Above and Beyond Award for Heroic Achievement to the plane’s flight attendant.
Seconds after the accident, she looked around, saw that the main cabin door was stuck, and guided the plane’s two passengers to a rear baggage exit. The three barely escaped before the plane exploded. Unfortunately, the plane’s two pilots perished. The NBAA says that had it not been for the flight attendant staying calm and professional, the crash would likely have proven fatal for the two passengers as well.
