!3-Year-Old Killed, Three Other Injured In Naples Car Accident Involving Teen Driver
One young person was killed and three others were seriously injured in a recent, tragic car accident in Naples. According to a March 18, 2023 Fox 4 news report, it happened just after 9:00 p.m. on a Friday night at the corner of Collier Boulevard and Golden Gate Parkway.
Police report that a 17-year-old girl was driving a sedan north on Collier Boulevard when she pulled in front of a pick-up truck while attempting to make a turn. The truck collided with the rear of the sedan, causing it to spin and end up in the intersection. The driver and her three passengers were all taken to local hospitals with serious personal injuries. One of them, a 13-year-old boy, died as a result.
Neither the driver nor a passenger in the truck was harmed. Police are continuing to investigate the crash and have not revealed any underlying causes or whether the teenage driver would be charged.
Factors That Make Teen Car Accidents In Naples More Likely To Happen
According to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), late spring through the end of summer is one of the most dangerous times of year for teen drivers. Specifically, the period between Memorial and Labor Day is known as ‘The 100 Most Dangerous Days’ for teen drivers, with car accidents claiming the lives of nearly 7,000 people under the age of 18 during this time period each year. Factors officials say make teen car accidents more likely to happen include:
- Lack of experience: Teens have less driving experience than their older counterparts and are more likely to make driving mistakes. They also lack experience in handling unexpected events that can occur while on the road.
- Lack of maturity: Due to their age, teen drivers generally lack maturity and are more likely to engage in dangerous behavior, such as speeding, running red lights, and driving under the influence.
- Increased risk of distractions: Teens are more likely to get distracted by their phones, stereo or GPS equipment, objects outside of the vehicle, or other passengers.
