Racing Through Redlights And Other Dangerous Behaviors That Increase Naples Intersection Car Accident Risks

RedTrafficLight2

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, close to 6,000 automobile accidents in Collier County happen each year. Intersections are among the most likely places for them to occur and can result in life-threatening injuries. Our Naples car accident lawyer explains the role red light running played in a tragic local case and other dangerous behaviors that increase the risks.

Red Light Running To Blame For Fatal Naples Car Accident

A Bonita Springs teen is facing criminal charges for a fatal red light running crash that claimed the life of a local woman, but the criminal justice system moves slowly. The accident happened in December of 2023, as the teen approached the intersection at Neapolitan Way and Ninth Street North at around 5:30 p.m. The light had already changed, but the teen accelerated up to over 80 miles per hour and sped through it, only to crash directly into a vehicle carrying an older couple, which was headed the opposite direction.

While the man in the other vehicle survived the accident, his wife did not. The at fault teen faces criminal charges for her death, but on July 18, 2024, the Naples Daily News reported that a judge recently reduced his bail, much to the frustration of the victim’s husband. In her memory, he is seeking to have red light cameras installed throughout the area, similar to those used in other cities across the state, including Sarasota, Orlando, and Miami.

Red Light Running And Common Causes Of Intersection Crashes In Naples

Intersections are one of the most common places for car accidents in Naples to happen, and racing to avoid sitting at red lights is one of the most common causes. In addition to red light running, other behaviors that increase the risks include:

  • Pulling far out into an intersection and making turns after the light changes;
  • Increasing your speed to get through a yellow light;
  • Jumping out ahead of a green light or laying on your horn, pressuring others to engage in similarly reckless behavior.

All of these increase the risk of intersection crashes, as do driving distracted or under the influence. At fault drivers can face criminal penalties but victims are often frustrated by how slowly the criminal court moves in prosecuting offenders. It is important to be aware that, regardless of any charges filed in the case, you have the right to seek a sense of justice and the compensation you need to recover from your crash through a Naples car accident claim.
